The title of this piece was supposed to be ‘What is it like to be Raiders Captain Jarrod Croker?’ … until I got a girl crush on his partner.
I organised an interview with Jarrod at his pad and didn’t know his girlfriend Brittney would be home. It turns out there are two impressive humans living under that roof. I met a formidable businesswoman with an eye for design who doubles as the Raiders biggest fan.
I was supposed to be bringing you the latest from Raiders HQ but I’ve come home with footage of her, their ah-may-zing house and four legged fur babies to share, instead.
For the Raiders fans I did get SOME key facts; Jarrod has lucky budgie smugglers. He wears those and eats a Maxibon ice-cream before most games.
Coach Ricky Stewart is huge on bringing past legends of the game back to work with the current playing group. It’s all about pride, mateship and respect for the jersey.
That’s enough, back to my crush.
You know how they say behind every great man there’s a great woman?
Brittney runs her business from home to support Jarrod and crafts her week and work around Raiders training and games.
That girl loves game day – she gets more nervous than Jarrod before big matches. Brittney travels to all away games and when at home, she’s cheering alongside the bus load of family who come in from Goulbourn rain, hail or shine.
These two met in high school and she reminisces fondly about that time, telling me she paid more attention to him than school but wouldn’t have it any other way.
On the topic of Jarrod’s recent on-field success and subsequent string of TV and radio interviews Brittney quietly says to me “It’s nice to see him getting the attention he deserves”. I saw strength, love and admiration.
I also wanted to share this side with you because we often see these boys being celebrated in the media and they absolutely deserve it. But those closest to them, their partners and family who ride this roller coaster with them deserve just as much cheering.
*pulls out pom poms*
The Raiders aren’t the only strong team getting around and oh my, these two Goulburn kids have a home TO DIE FOR.
Go Raiders. Go love.
